MuniWireless highlighted an interview with Philippe Keryer, executive vice president and president of carrier products at Alcatel-Lucent, regarding the vendor's new offering called "enhanced wireless DSL." Since the vendor's major mobile operator customers have made the choice to move forward with LTE, Alcatel-Lucent is coming to market with a combined platform solution that includes WiMAX and LTE. He said WiMAX could be used as a more cost-effective solution in rural markets and more less-populated markets.
However, Keryer said: "We have dramatically reduced our investment in WiMAX for 2009." The vendor has in the past stated it will continue to offer mobile WiMAX but will not develop a complex roadmap of features that enables WiMAX operators to compete with LTE operators.
