A photo walkthrough of Verizon's LTE ambitions

Last week's Consumer Electronics Show was host to an almost dizzying array of futuristic technologies, from 3D TVs to super-thin tablet computers. And, of course, wireless was on scene with all manner of gizmos and gewgaws.

Although Verizon Wireless, the nation's largest wireless carrier, kept a relatively low profile at the show, the carrier did show off its progress on its most ambitious effort to date: the planned rollout of its Long Term Evolution network, operating in the 700 MHz spectrum the carrier purchased for close to $10 billion during the FCC's 2008 auction. Verizon is scheduled to launch commercial LTE service in 25-30 markets, covering 100 million POPs, by the end of this year.

Verizon and its LTE partners were on hand in Las Vegas to show off a live, demo LTE network running at the Las Vegas Convention Center. The carrier and its partners demonstrated the network's speed, as well as the possible applications and devices that could be deployed over LTE.

Though all participants cautioned at their wares were for demonstration purposes only, the event still served as a window to a possible LTE future.
