Why it’s
Fierce: Arcadian Networks offers a smart new twist
to wireless broadband. The firm, which holds licenses in the 700 MHz spectrum
covering about 60 percent of the U.S., is building a private
wireless network and offering connectivity to utility companies, gas companies,
government agencies and other firms. The goal is to provide these firms with
connectivity for such mission-critical applications as security monitoring,
field force automation and data collection. Arcadian Networks calls itself a wireless
broadband carrier but unlike traditional cellular carriers the firm isn’t
interested in carrying voice traffic or providing coverage in densely populated
urban areas. Instead the carrier is focused
on providing coverage in rural areas where wireless broadband coverage is
scarce.
The firm has raised $90 million in financing over
the past year and has some notable investors including Goldman Sachs and Co.
and Gilo Ventures.
What to
look for: Arcadian Networks has inked one significant deal with Minnesota utility Great
River Energy, which provides wholesale electric service to 28 distribution
co-ops. With its bevy of funding, we
expect the company to continue to build out its nationwide network and attract
the attention of utilities and government agencies looking for dedicated
broadband connectivity.
