Why it’s Fierce: Through its WiFi technology and alliances with VoIP providers, Boingo Wireless has been making wVoIP an everyday reality for years. The company has long-standing relationships with Skype and Vonage to enable wVoIP service from more than 100,000 hotspots. Boingo’s software provides signal sniffing, network profile management, 802.1x log-in authentication, WiFi Protected Access (WPA) and virtual private network (VPN) data encryption. Rather than spending billions building infrastructure, Boingo is patching together hotspots that already exist. The company is also making it easier for coffee shop owners and other venue operators to deploy their own hotspots--and in the process join the Boingo Network. The company is the brainchild of technology innovator and Earthlink founder Sky Dayton.
