3GPP approves UMTS femtocell standards

The Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) has approved specifications for UMTS femtocells, paving the way for standardized femtocells to become available for the first time this year.

Some issues remain around security and network management, but the specs agreed to in December represents a "full femto standard for UMTS," Femto Forum Chairman Simon Saunders told Unstrung. "It's the first standard for femtocells, period," Saunders added. "The work that has been done has been truly impressive."
