ADC: Accessing web content via apps eases networks strain

Wireless networks solutions provider ADC is claiming that the network capacity strain operators feel thanks to mobile broadband growth is a result of subscribers accessing online content via the mobile Web browser rather than using applications.

"Bandwidth demands placed on network infrastructure are reduced as some data is stored right on the handset," said a statement from John Spindler, vice president of product management at ADC. "Mobile applications provide a far more efficient way for users to experience the mobile Web."

However, research from Orange recently found that the vast majority of European smartphone users rather consume media online via their device's web browser. As such, Spindler said mobile applications that provide access to online content need to be more engaging so as to lure users away from their browsers.
