China continues to hedge on 3G

China continues to play coy about when it plans to issue 3G licenses. Lou Qinjian, vice-minister of China's information industry, indicated China has no timetable for issuing the licenses, saying 3G services still lacked a clear business model. Of course, the Chinese government has been pushing the country's home-grown standard, TD-SCDMA, and has a vested interest in making sure it competes well with the more mature 3G technologies, WCDMA and EV-DO. And vendors have been wringing their hands to get 3G in China, especially with all of the profit warnings.
