China Unicom finally introduces Apple iPhone 3GS with WiFi

China Unicom said it would start selling Apple's iPhone 3GS that includes WiFi access on Monday after the Chinese government temporarily banned the WiFi standard prior to the phone's launch in October 2009.

Back in March it was revealed that Apple and Unicom were complying with Chinese regulations by incorporating the Chinese homegrown standard called WAPI  alongside WiFi, which was part of revised Chinese regulations.

WiFi is in demand because it's cheaper to use than 3G connections. Chinese customers already have to shell out between $730 and $1,020 for an iPhone. WiFi is seen as a key feature to compete against the Chinese "gray market" that offers full-featured imported iPhones.
