Is Clearwire launching WiMAX in Los Angeles?

Tools

Clearwire may be gearing up for a WiMAX deployment in Los Angeles, according to an article in Unstrung. The operator, which expects to merge with Sprint's WiMAX operations this year, has posted advertisements for new jobs related to a "next-generation deployment" in Los Angeles. Clearwire hasn't officially announced plans to launch in Los Angeles.

Meanwhile, The New York Times and BusinessWeek issued positive reports on the performance of Sprint's Xohm network in Baltimore. Bob Tedeschi at the Times tested various adapters and devices, including the Nokia N810 WiMax Edition and found solid performance wherever he tested, although he noted that the network is not loaded at this point. BusinessWeek's Stephen Wildstrom said he saw rates of 3 Mbps down and 500 Kbps to 1 Mbps up, and was able to watch Hulu.com streaming content as a passenger in a moving vehicle.
