DoCoMo pushes 120 Mbps using LTE

Japan's NTT DoCoMo said its successful field tests of LTE resulted in data transmissions in the range of 120 Mbps in an urban environment.

The operator used equipment from Fujitsu, deploying a 4 X 4 MIMO-based LTE network in a special testing location within the northern Japanese city of Sapporo in Hokkaio using 10 megahertz of spectrum. DoCoMo and Fujitsu Laboratories jointly developed LTE prototypes. By reaching 120 Mbps in a 10-megahertz swath of spectrum, DoCoMo reasons then that it could achieve 240 Mbps throughput using the 20 megahertz maximum bandwidth LTE allows. DoCoMo chose Fujitsu in 2006 to develop and manufacture LTE base stations for the operator.

The two companies also say they have conducted successful testing of a prototype three-sector LTE base station that enables 300 Mbps per sector on the downlink using 20 megahertz of spectrum.
