Starent wins Cox 3G contract

Cox Communications, which plans to roll out CDMA EV-DO in the 700 MHz band using Huawei gear, has been handing out the contracts lately as it moves toward a launch of its network later this year. Today the cable operator announced it will use Starent Networks' multimedia core networking solutions for its wireless network.

Starent's intelligent Packet Data Serving Node (PDSN) and Home Agent (HA) will deliver data and multimedia services within Cox's 3G network, while the vendor's intelligent In-line Services include enhanced charging, content filtering, network-based traffic optimization, application detection and optimization as well as stateful firewall designed to improve network performance and reliability. 

Cox's aim is to eventually migrate to Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology. It is deploying Huawei's LTE-ready SingleRAN solution and 3900 Series base stations. The cable company is expected to launch its service later this year, which will serve around 23 million potential customers.

Last week, Bridgewater Systems announced that Cox Communications will deploy the Bridgewater Service Controller.
