Ericsson develops HSPA module for laptops

Ericsson has developed its first HSPA module for laptops and other client devices, challenging Qualcomm, Novatel and Sierra Wireless. The world's largest vendor, an opponent of WiMAX, appears to be looking to accelerate the adoption of HSDPA before WiMAX ramps up.

The Ericsson F3507 module is designed to deliver HSPA at rates of 7.2 mbps for a downlink and 2 mbps for an uplink. Ericsson is looking to compete on price when it goes had to head with Qualcomm starting in January. The vendor hasn't revealed pricing information but said its strong patent position and move to primarily use in-house chips would significantly drive down the cost. The company is aiming for 50 percent of notebook computers to adopt HSPA modules by 2011.
