iPhone OS 3.0 offers faster WiFi connections

AT&T says that the new iPhone OS 3.0, released June 17, supports auto-authentication for iPhone OS 3.0 users connecting to AT&T WiFi Hotspots. Auto-authentication allows iPhone users to seamlessly switch between the carrier's HSPA network and an AT&T Hotspot without being prompted.

The new auto-authentication process is available for all existing iPhone and iPhone 3G customers who download the update via iTunes. It will also be available to iPhone 3G S customers when that device goes on sale June 19.

AT&T also says that its WiFi Hotspot usage is growing. More than 4 million connections were made to AT&T Hotspots in the first quarter of 2009 using smartphones, including the Apple iPhone 3G.  Overall, AT&T's WiFi connections in first quarter topped 10.5 million.
