Japanese companies report progress with LTE mobile device platform

Japan's NTT DoCoMo, NEC, Panasonic Mobile and Fujitsu said they are making headway in their jointly developed mobile-handset platform for LTE.

The four companies said they have finished developing an LTE-PF chipset engineering sample and are evaluating its main functions. The companies hope to license the the core system, which consists of baseband processing software and other functions for mobile devices, as a way to offer a common platform. The idea is to avoid having various device makers create proprietary technologies for basic handset functions. With a common platform, they are expected to bring their products to market faster and at lower costs.

LTE-PF is based on the LTE protocol that is in the process of being standardized by the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP).
