Japan's WiMAX operator strikes base station deal with NEC

UQ Communications, a mobile WiMAX operator in Japan whose investors include KDDI and Intel, has chosen NEC to supply 802.16e base stations. According to NEC, its WiMAX PsoWings Bs202 base station product is the world's first WiMAX base station to include uplink-beamforming (UL-BF) technologies. UL-BF is designed to improve the data speed and increase base station coverage area by reducing interference between the base station and the data transmission terminal.

UQ has been conducting WiMAX service trials in Tokyo, Yokohama and Kawasaki since February, using 600 Wave-2 Phase 2-compliant Samsung base stations. UQ says that it has been obtaining data speeds of 16 Mbps on the downlink and up to 3.9 Mbps on the uplink during the trials, with a maximum downlink speed of 40 Mbps. The operator plans to roll out commercial service July 1. UQ is looking to cover 90 percent of the population by the end of March 2013.
