LTE standardization almost complete

Tools

The Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) has completed the majority of specifications for standardization of Long-Term Evolution (LTE) next-generation technology, meaning the full Release 8 standard is on track for completion by March.

The 3GPP still has to work on the evolved packet core, otherwise known as System Architecture Evolution, because the specifications weren't complete enough. 3GPP has written up a list of "exceptions" that will need to be finalized by March in order to be included in Release 8, according to an Unstrung article.

"There are a number of pieces of work which we thought should be included but weren't quite ready," said Adrian Scrase, vice president of international partnership projects with the European Telecommunications Standards Institute. "[There are] quite a number of parts for SAE, the work [on which] still lags behind LTE work. We have a high level of confidence that the items will be completed by March, otherwise we wouldn't have included them on the list."

The question now is, how fast will vendors be able to churn out standardized LTE equipment?

The self appointed Standardization Group known as 3GPP, is not a recognized scientific body. They are not a Standards Group and this is not a Standard. PERIOD!!!!!! Unless and until, LTE is Standardized by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the only International Standards body recognized IEC/CCITT, it is not a standard. LTE needs to spend more time in IEEE 802.16 (M) version. Where it is vetted by the top engineers in the world, and voted approval by the IEEE Standards Body as a whole. Just like WiMax has done.
Hey Bill, clearly you've spent no time in any of the Standards meetings! Or perhaps you just work for Intel. When the going gets IP and business tough it's all Geek LA Law wannabees and backroom CEO to CEO calls. Other than the seriously non-partisan players, all contributors to 3GPP are also contributors to one or more of 802.xx. Let's look at some globally successful cellular Comms standards... GSM, 3G, cdma2000... and I guess you can't spell ITU or ETSI either.
that's right bill - one size will not fit all, if only one group ruled over all; the new world order would had been put into place @ 1939 - 1945. It's nice to have a system that the market set's up as the standard... to the world the best - to hell with the rest!
