Mobile WiMAX now in 12 Clearwire markets (albeit several small ones)

Tools

Sidecut Reports points out that Clearwire has launched its new mobile WiMAX service in cities where it previously offered pre-WiMAX service. The markets are small ones that include:

  • Abilene, Texas;
  • Amarillo, Texas;
  • Bellingham, Wash.;
  • Boise, Idaho;
  • Corpus Christi, Texas;
  • Killeen, Texas;
  • Lubbock, Texas;
  • Midland/Odessa, Texas; and
  • Waco, Texas

That brings the total new "Clear" markets to 12, which includes the metro markets of Atlanta, Las Vegas and Sprint's Xohm market Baltimore. Sidecut Reports' explanation certainly makes sense. Clearwire could easily throw up a few towers and declare a small market open for business and count these markets toward its ambitious plan to roll out 80 markets by 2010.

Clearwire this morning issued a release saying the official launch of these markets will happen Sept. 1.

I wish Clear much success, and I believe in their strategy. Coverage maps for areas north of Bellingham look impressive, but much of the area is farmland, with some of the urban growth fringe (areas having much greater density) being overlooked. The good news here, for Clear, is that there are still uncovered pops that would love getting connected to Clear, either because Satellite is the only option, or for the plug and play simplicity. Will Clear's ambitious rollout plans accomodate coverage infill is this and other markets, or will people be left wanting?

I find it supprising that no one is talking about their current customers that are losing service due to this so called better network. I for one cannot get connect to the new network and Clear is not being very helpful. I have been a customer for over 4 years and they simply want to cancel my service.
