Nortel's $4.5B patent sale could be delayed

Tools

Nortel Networks' $4.5 billion sale of its patent portfolio could be delayed after Canada's Industry Minister Christian Paradis launched an investigation to ensure the sale aligns within the Investment Canada Act. Last week, Nortel sold the portfolio of 6,000 patents to a consortium made up of Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL), Microsoft, Research In Motion (NASDAQ:RIMM) and Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC) after a bidding round, where Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) lost out after its initial bid of $900 million was trumped. Under the Investment Canada Act, transactions worth more than C$312 million involving foreign investors are subject to review by the Ministry. Article
