Report: Massive smartphone sales expected thanks to WiMAX, LTE

A report from Datamonitor's Business Insights division concludes that WiMAX and LTE will push tremendous growth in smartphones that will subsequently result in widespread adoption of new applications such as gaming, video and social networking.

"The improved network speed, efficiency and capacity provided by 4G, together with the increasing capabilities of converged mobile devices will lead to increased rich media content and applications," Business Insights analyst Richard Absalum said in a statement.

The firm predicts that smartphone sales will triple between 2009 and 2013, growing from 185 million units to 451 million units. Business Insights also forecasts netbook shipments to quadruple in the same period, with tablets and e-readers seeing even more success. The firm expects e-reader sales to grow nearly 10 times in the 2009 to 2013 time period.
