Taiwanese WiMAX makers worry about Sprint
Taiwanese WiMAX equipment makers are nervous about a potential spin off of Sprint Nextel's WiMAX business, according to a DigiTimes article coming out of Taiwan. Citing unnamed sources, the publication said if Sprint spins off the business, WiMAX could be delayed. The sources stated that any changes brought to Sprint's $5 billion WiMAX project would have a negative impact on the global telecom industry. Taiwanese vendors are attempting to position themselves in the forefront of WiMAX development.

It would indeed appear that the Taiwan WiMAX makers have a reason to worry on delays in WiMAX rollouts as they have already taken projected larger sales and factored it in thier product prices.Owing to the M-Taiwan program, it is today the factory of the World so far as mobile WiMAX products are concerned.Over 80% of PC Cards and USB modems are slated to originate from Taiwan.
However the launch of WiMAX in 9 cities by Wi-Com and the imminent launch by Sprint by April 2008 should set things right. The release of certified devices by 2Q by the WiMAX forum should also help. They however need to bide more time than perhaps budgeted.
