Towerstream rolls out first WiMAX market

Towerstream has launched its first network using WiMAX technology in Chicago in the 3.65 GHz band. The company, which targets businesses with wireless broadband services, is using Alvarion non-line-of-sight equipment along side its existing point-to-point and point-to-multipoint networks that operate in unlicensed 5.8 GHz bands.

Towerstream said the new network has technical advantages over its current proprietary system. Smart antenna technology allows the new network to propagate around buildings. In terms of cost, Towerstream can now leverage the economies of scale associated with WiMAX technology.
