U.K. regulator approves white-space spectrum

U.K.'s regulator, Ofcom, has approved the use of white-space spectrum for services such as broadband Internet and M2M. The regulator predicts that white-space technology will come to market by 2013. The regulator said the frequencies are comparable to the amount of spectrum currently available for 3G services, and therefore have the potential to ease the strain on mobile networks. Ofcom said they could be used to extend broadband to rural communities by building a network of transmitters that use white spaces to connect remote locations to areas that already have sufficient broadband infrastructure.
