Free WiFi coming back to Milpitas, Calif.

The muni-WiFi network in Milpitas, Calif. that was abandoned by EarthLink, will have another chance to offer free WiFi as the city is negotiating an agreement with Silicon Valley Unwired to take over the network and offer free service to the city. Silicon Valley Unwired will include Google, I-Net Solutions, the city of Milpitas and several wireless manufacturers. Milpitas owns the network, which it acquired from EarthLink for $800,000 with plans to use it for municipal purposes. Last June, the city issued a tender searching for providers to take over the network. I-Net Solutions and Veraloft responded. I-Net is now part of the non-profit Silicon Valley Unwired as the entity that provides technical support. Google has a network running in Mountain View.
