Zyxel announces MiFi competitor

Taiwan-based Zyxel Communications has introduced a competitor to Novatel's MiFi device, a move that is expected to be replicated by a number of Novatel's competitors.

The pocket-sized mobile wireless router, called the MWR222, is compatible with 802.11n devices and 3G networks and will be available for sale for $300 in the first quarter through several online electronics sites rather than via wireless operators, Jake Sailana, marketing manager for Zyxel's North America operations told Computerworld. Two other mobile routers will be sold with varying features for $200 and $100, he said.

Sailana said the device supports any USB adapter from any wireless operator. The company is hoping to convince operators to resell the service but also touts its independence as a way for businesses to choose their wireless providers.

The company touts advantages over the MiFi, including portable battery power and 802.11n compatibility. However, the device is twice as heavy as the MiFi's 2 ounces and more than twice as thick. MiFi is sold through Verizon Wireless and Sprint Nextel in the U.S.
