Sprint Nextel said poor execution by its network vendor partners in the latter part of 2012 was part of what caused it to delay LTE deployments and its larger Network Vision network modernization plan, according to a securities filing.
T-Mobile US CEO John Legere said it is possible, but by no means certain, that its prepaid brand MetroPCS will get Apple's iPhone, but he and CMO Mike Sievert made clear they want to move as many MetroPCS customers as possible onto T-Mobile's HSPA+ and LTE networks.
Sprint Nextel's announcement last week that it had inked a deal with module provider u-blox to be Sprint's preferred module provider for its 2G (1xRTT) CDMA network caught my attention for a few reasons, mainly because it's clearly designed at winning away machine-to-machine business from AT&T Mobility, which plans on shutting down its 2G network by 2017. I think Sprint can steal some of this business, and even though the customers and connections are low-bandwidth and provide low average revenue per user.
Sprint Nextel is squarely focused on driving its Network Vision network modernization project, which includes the rollout of LTE network technology, and is not letting Dish Network and SoftBank's competing bids for the company affect the effort, according to Sprint CFO Joe Eueteneuer.
MetroPCS shareholders approved the company's merger with Deutsche Telekom's T-Mobile USA, clearing the final hurdle for the merger of the nation's No. 4 and 5 carriers in a move that DT hopes will strengthen its U.S. brand. DT had improved the terms of its initial offer to win over wary shareholders.
MVNO FreedomPop announced it is beginning to move its services onto Sprint Nextel's CDMA EV-DO network, a move that will allow the company sell services nationwide rather than just in Clearwire's WiMAX coverage area. FreedomPop said the first device to make use of Sprint's network will be its new Overdrive Pro mobile hotspot. FreedomPop CEO Stephen Stokols also confirmed to FierceWireless that the company's business model is working, and that FreedomPop is currently "profitable from a gross margin perspective."
Sprint Nextel is shifting its focus to the future and its CDMA and LTE networks as it nears the shutdown of its Nextel iDEN network, scheduled for the middle of the year. As it has in the past several quarters, the company reported relatively strong metrics for its "Sprint platform" (CDMA and LTE) while losing subscribers from its legacy Nextel (iDEN) network.
Sprint Nextel inked a deal with cellular module provider u-blox to be Sprint's preferred module provider for its 2G (1xRTT) CDMA network. Sprint is seeking to cash in on the machine-to-machine market as AT&T Mobility and others shut down their 2G networks in the years ahead.
Verizon Wireless finalized the purchase of Mohave Wireless from Frontier Communications and Rio Virgin Telephone, which had been running the carrier. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Sprint Nextel is continuing its push to attract small business customers to its modernized networks, with its latest promotion promising deals on devices as well as credit for every wireless line switched from a competitor.
