Now that it's owned by T-Mobile US, MetroPCS has decided to drop its lawsuit against the FCC's net neutrality rules for wireless and wired networks, leaving Verizon Wireless as the sole challenger to the rules.
Verizon Wireless launched new prepaid pricing that significantly increases the amount of data its prepaid smartphone customers can consume per month with their plans, as competition in the prepaid market, especially among Tier 1 players, continues to heat up.

T-Mobile US reported that since it started selling Apple's iPhone nationwide April 12 it has sold 500,000 units of the device, an indication of pent-up demand for the gadget at the carrier. T-Mobile made the disclosure in conjunction with the release of its first-quarter results, in which it said its total revenue slipped 7 percent.
T-Mobile US CEO John Legere said it is possible, but by no means certain, that its prepaid brand MetroPCS will get Apple's iPhone, but he and CMO Mike Sievert made clear they want to move as many MetroPCS customers as possible onto T-Mobile's HSPA+ and LTE networks.
T-Mobile USA and MetroPCS officially closed their merger transaction and are now one publicly traded company. T-Mobile started trading today on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol "TMUS."
T-Mobile USA said it will continue to support its GoSmart Mobile prepaid brand after it closes its merger with MetroPCS. The news is notable considering T-Mobile plans to take MetroPCS' prepaid brand nationwide after it closes its merger with the flat-rate, no-contract carrier.
MetroPCS said that LTE subscribers now make up 39 percent of its subscriber base, an important figure for T-Mobile USA as that carrier ramps plans to merge its network with MetroPCS' network. The 39 percent figure is in MetroPCS' first-quarter results, which are its last as an independent company; MetroPCS shareholders voted overwhelmingly Wednesday to approve the company's merger with T-Mobile.
MetroPCS shareholders approved the company's merger with Deutsche Telekom's T-Mobile USA, clearing the final hurdle for the merger of the nation's No. 4 and 5 carriers in a move that DT hopes will strengthen its U.S. brand. DT had improved the terms of its initial offer to win over wary shareholders.
