ABI: Ultra-mobile device shipments to exceed 200M by 2013

ABI Research says shipments of ultra-mobile devices, which include ultra-mobile PCs, networks and mobile Internet devices (MIDs), will exceed 200 million units in 2013. MIDs will make up the bulk of the shipments, taking 68 percent of the market, while netbooks will take up most of the rest. Ultra-mobile PCs will have a niche role in the market. Article

ABI: SMBs adopting mobile broadband faster than large enterprises

According to a new study from ABI Research, small- to medium-sized businesses are adopting mobile broadand quicker than large enterprises. The study says that since a smaller business can easily buy mobile broadband devices and services from commercial retail outlets, they are implementing the technology faster than their larger counterparts. ABI: Femtocells to overtake UMA, SIP solutions by 2013

ABI Research expects cellular-based femtocells to outpace UMA and SIP-based WiFi solutions by 2013, grabbing 62 percent of the market. According to Stuart Carlaw, vice president and research: "Although UMA-based WiFi solutions have seen early gains in greenfield markets, these solutions have not proliferated much outside their current carrier footprints. This can be attributed partly to the carriers' desire to assess femtocell developments, but also to lingering concerns regarding the concept of WiFi-based fixed-mobile convergence." Article

ABI: 32M LTE subs in 2013

A new study from ABI Research says Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology will support more than 32 million subscribers by 2013. That's three years after the technology is expected to become commercially available. ABI says about 12 million of those subscribers will be users in the Asia-Pacific region. Article
