Towerstream, which targets the enterprise market with fixed wireless, announced its second-quarter revenues increased 53 percent to $2.5 million compared with $1.6 million in 2007. Meanwhile, customer churn for the second quarter was 1.17 percent, representing an improvement of 36 percent from the second quarter 2007.

CEO Jeff Thompson said: "These strong results reflect the continued maturation of both our newer markets and our sales force. Over the past 12 months, we have significantly increased the number of account executives and the customer pipelines developed by our expanded sales force is beginning to yield results. Our Internet-based marketing initiatives, and the success of our mid-range product offering of 8 mbps at $999 per month, are also driving sales growth."

Towerstream currently offers service in eight markets with plans to expand to 20 next year. The company is also testing standardized Mobile WiMAX with Alvarion for better economies of scale.

UK provider ready for big WiMAX deployment

On-Communications, a British wireless broadband service provider targeting the enterprise, said it has committed to a widespread rollout of fixed WiMAX in the U.K.'s major cities and towns. The company's CEO Ian Roberts says WiMAX is ready for "prime-time deployment," and the company will deploy a substantial number of fixed WiMAX base stations in its existing markets, replacing existing fixed-wireless infrastructure.

On-Communications already offers fixed wireless services using unlicensed spectrum in the 5.4 GHz and 5.8 GHz bands to enterprise users in London and other surrounding cities. The operator won't be bidding on any WiMAX spectrum either, preferring to play in the fixed WiMAX market using unlicensed spectrum. The company claims it can provide the quality of service necessary for enterprise applications such as VoIP and video.
