Intel among winners of 2.6 GHz spectrum in Sweden

Intel Capital was among the winners of Sweden's auction of he 2.6 GHz band, acquiring 50 MHz of TDD spectrum for $26.5 million. According to local press reports, Intel is seeking partners to build and operate a WiMAX network. The company, which recently plunked down $1 billion in the new Sprint-Clearwire WiMAX business, reportedly plans to rent out the license to partners rather than sell it.

Intel has made it clear the it isn't interested in becoming a service provider to push WiMAX. As part of the Clearwire deal, Intel has the option of wholesaling service from the new operator, but Intel Vice President Sriram Viswanathan told analysts that the company's primary focus "is to enable the platform to have WiMAX available across a variety of devices. You have to expect we're going to be primarily a technology supplier."

The other winners for 2.6 GHz spectrum, which is technology and service neutral, each acquired FDD allocations: H3G Access (2x10 MHz), Tele2 (2x20 MHz), Telenor (2x20 MHz) and TeliaSonera Mobile Networks (2x20 MHz).

TeliaSonera paid the most for its license, $93 million, while Intel paid the least. H3G Access, with only 20 MHz of spectrum, paid $49 million.

Intel completes design of 802.16e baseband chip

More WiMAX news from Intel, as the company said it had completed the design of the Intel WiMAX Connection 2300, its first mobile WiMAX baseband chip. The chip was shown at the 3G World Congress in Hong Kong, to coincide with presentation by Intel's Sean Maloney. Maloney showed how an Intel Centrino Duo mobile technology-based laptop with 802.16e-2005, WiFi and HSDPA 3G capabilities could successfully access the Internet over a mobile WiMAX network.

The Intel WiMAX Connection 2300 moves the company closer to realizing its vision of integrating wireless SoC to help drive WiMAX adoption. Intel, for the first time, also incorporated MIMO functionality into the baseband chip. What is more, the baseband chip uses the same software for Intel's WiMAX and WiFi solutions, thus allowing for unified management for connectivity.

Intel is now planning to focus on validating and testing the chip, with plans to sample both card and module forms beginning in late 2007.

Trend: WiMax making steady progress in Europe

WiMax is making steady progress in Europe. A few recent examples:

French ADSL operator the Iliad Group is acquiring Altitude Telecom. Altitude, which owns the only license granted by ARCEP (the French national telecommunications regulatory authority) to operate in the 3.5GHz band throughout France, has deployed an 802.16d-compliant BreezeMAX platform from Alvarion. The company has also deployed Cirpack's Class-5 switches to launch telephony services over WiMax for businesses. Iliad will acquire Altitude's residential and WiMax activities. Iliad | Altitude

T-Com, the fixed-line subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom, has started field trials of a WiMax wireless broadband service in Swisttal and St. Augustin, two towns near Bonn, Germany. The field trial includes customers who are out of range of DSL service. The trial will end in March 2006. Story

The first commercial WiMax network will soon be deployed in Austria by WiMax Telecom using Alcatel gear; and UK telco Telebria said it will be offering WiMax high-speed broadband access to 50,000 homes in the Swale area of Kent. Report | Release

PLUS: Students and faculty at the Argentinian agricultural school of Maria del Carmen Villar use WiMax to video-conference with colleagues in San Francisco. Story

ALSO: Alcatel and the Indian government are joining in WiMax research. Story

FINALLY: Alvarion said it is the first vendor to ship a WiMax CPE which uses the new Intel WiMax chipset. Story
